We took our family to Disneyworld this Christmas in celebration of my daughter's college graduation. Not wanting to spend the money to stay inside the park we stayed in a town that was pretty much just a city of hotels. The name was Kissimmee. It reminded me of a story I heard of another family who stayed in Kissimmee. A man and his family were having a discussion of how to correctly pronounce the name of the city. It was such an odd spelling that no one in the car could get it. They pulled into a fast food restaurant and asked the high school student behind the counter exactly how to pronounce where they were. The dad said, "could you pronounce it very slowly ….. The young girl was glad to help and said, "Sure! BBBuuuurrrrggggerrr KKKiiinnnggg." It took my family many hours to get to Kissimmee and Disneyworld, and I thought how people spend their whole lives going in the wrong direction, always wondering why life does not work. There is a way to get the life both God and you want. The Bible says... "Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. [2] But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. [3] He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers." (Psalm 1:1-3 NIV)
At one time it was true that all roads led to Rome, but all roads do not lead to a blessed life. I have heard people say, "we are all going to heaven, just some take a pickup and some a Cadillac." Wrong, wrong, wrong! Look what the Son of God said,
"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to Destruction and many enter through it. [14] But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life and only a few find it." (Matthew 7:13-14 NIV)
Not a hundred roads… two. One is WISDOM and the other is WHATEVER. If you find yourself standing and spending most of your time in the Whatever road… the road that says nothing really matters… it doesn't matter how you live….no priorities… you know whatever- I suggest you get off that road now! You do not want to arrive at the final destination with a laissez-faire attitude to life- because it will not get you anywhere.
There are definitely two different roads; and God says that His Wisdom is crying out to us. He tries to get our attention so as to get us on the right road. When I lived the life of a hippie in Austin Texas my friends and I were sure we knew all the answers for the world. Of course we just could not get our own act together. All during that time my godly mother prayed for me. And God would answer her and surround me with genuine Christians. I mean it was like I could not open a car door with out bumping into a born again Christian! Wisdom was crying out to me. The righteousness, peace and joy of those Christians were a living reproach to my sin and cynicism. If I was so smart why was I going from misshape and disaster, running from my conscience, and they were happy doing and having less "stuff" than me? The two roads for me were becoming very clear. Theirs was leading to Life and mine was not. I am so glad that God is merciful. He will let you turn around and begin walking down His right, narrow road, and get all the benefits, even if we have spent years on the wrong one. What a God!
